Spring 2025: The azulejos that make up the SiPN Mosaic

Group photo of the SiPN Spring 2025 students and staff taken at FLAD during orientation day in Lisbon, Portugal.

This semester, SiPN  proudly  welcomed what became a diverse mosaic of individual azulejos– stories–of 69 students from 14 universities across the United States.
Spending a full semester in a new environment asks that students navigate various stages of adaptation. The SiPN team plays a vital role in supporting this journey, helping students become familiar with the city, their new homes, academic settings, and cultural norms that differ from their home institutions. However, once settled, students are encouraged to further explore their surroundings, take advantage of new opportunities, and immerse themselves in Portuguese culture on their own.

Throughout the semester, Spring students participated in a wide range of activities, including SiPN-promoted field trips to historic cities such as Braga, Guimarães, Coimbra, Beja, Évora, Portalegre, Marvão, and Castelo de Vide. In addition, the program offered a variety of engagement opportunities through Intercultural Competence Groups –collaborative sessions intended to develop student’s cross-cultural understanding– other regular check-ins, and social events.

Even if the large majority of SiPN semester long students do not speak any portuguese, the representation of students who already possess some degree of language and culture mastery is relevant. Ismail Karim (Emory University) came to Portugal eager to deepen his understanding of the local culture. After three years of studying and speaking Portuguese, a semester with SiPN offered him the perfect opportunity to quench his thirst for cultural immersion. He is majoring in International Studies and Human Health, with a concentration in Epidemiology, making this experience a valuable complement to both his academic and personal goals.
His decision to come to Portugal with SiPN was inspired by recommendations from former students and Dr. Ana Catarina Teixeira, the director of the Portuguese Program at Emory University, fueled his enthusiasm and adaptability.

“I had the pleasure of being Ismael Karim’s first Portuguese professor at Emory, and from the very beginning, his passion for language and culture stood out. He is a truly remarkable student—curious, thoughtful, and deeply engaged. I’m so thankful he was able to take full advantage of the opportunity to study abroad in Portugal through the SiPN program, which so beautifully aligned with his academic and personal interests. The program designed and supported by SiPN is invaluable in fostering global citizenship and personal growth, and I’m proud to support students in these transformative experiences.”

After 4 months of embracing living in Lisbon as a “local,” advice Ismael offers to future SiPN students is:
Don’t hold back at all. Embrace the spontaneous nature of things. I know it definitely may feel daunting at first, coming into a different culture. It’s a different lifestyle, but I think if you at the start are able to be spontaneous and be willing to immerse yourself in things that you’re not used to, you’re really going to set yourself up for success and an enjoyable experience abroad..”

As the semester came to a close and June approached, the month of the Santos Populares celebration in Lisbon,  the SiPN team decided to bring the festive spirit to the students on the Farewell celebration – one lasting memory of their time in Lisbon as students. Take a look at some of the snaps – Santos Populares SiPN

The wrap-up of the Spring 2025 semester and the launch of SiPN’s summer programs marked a special milestone: SiPN’s 10-year anniversary celebration, themed “A Mosaic of Stories.” This celebration brought together students & partners both from Portugal and the US, highlighting the diverse partnerships and programs that define SiPN. Together, these vibrant academic and cultural contributions formed a rich mosaic that reflects the unique spirit of SiPN’s decade-long journey.

Life changing lecture

My brother had always encouraged me to study abroad and the start of my junior year seemed like the perfect time to start that adventure. I drew my inspiration for choosing Lisbon, Portugal from my anthropology professor and the many stories he told about living in Portugal and falling in love with the language, food, the people, and the culture.

Finding Her in Heritage

Growing up with immigrant parents I guess you could say that I had a different upbringing compared to most of my peers. Of course, there were times when cultures would clash leaving me stuck between my Portuguese and American identities, but over time I learned to embrace the best of two worlds. I had always wanted to visit mainland Portugal, but I never thought that I would get to experience living here which has provided me with an even better experience than I could have imagined. Studying abroad wasn’t originally part of my academic plans, but here I am in my senior year and this is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

From Grandparents to Me

Having grandparents from the Azores growing up, I thought I had a good understanding of Portuguese culture. I figured my trips to the Azores as a teenager, eating bacalhau and seeing my traditionally dressed grandmother cook octopus on Christmas made me an expert on the Portuguese experience. However when I arrived, I realized The Portuguese people are young, and Lisbon is culturally diverse and thriving city.

Across Four Continents

Long story short, I received a scholarship for my study abroad but with the condition that I study in Bahia, Brazil. That year changed my life and lead me to study abroad another semester in Florianópolis Brazil and earn a minor in Portuguese. As an advanced speaker of Portuguese being in Lisbon is a dream come true to be living my day to day life in the Portuguese language. Even the walk to the grocery store is never dull when you are surrounded by history and smiling Portuguese faces.

Another piece to the melting pot

Studying abroad seemed like the perfect opportunity to do this. I must admit, before coming to Portugal, if someone asked me where Lisbon was I would have had no clue. This however actually gives great insight as to why I chose Portugal as my study abroad destination. The chance to come to a place I had no knowledge of seemed like another great time to expose myself to beautiful new places, people, and things.

Happy coincidence

I started learning Portuguese by accident. I spent the majority of my life learning Spanish as a second language. Although my dad is from Peru, I never spoke Spanish with him growing up. I think this is how my love of languages arose. Frustrated that I never learned the language of my dad’s family, in school I dedicated myself to learning Spanish and to sounding as “Peruvian” as possible. Now, two and a half years later, I am a Spanish and Portuguese major studying abroad in Lisbon, Portugal. I never imagined that I would learn to speak Portuguese as quickly as I have, or that I would come to love the Portuguese-speaking world as much as I loved learning Spanish.

Positive Impact

Studying in Portugal was one of the best experiences of my life! I’ll always remember the friendships I made and the wonderful memories from traveling all over the country. I learned about Portuguese culture which has influenced me in profound ways that I treasure very much.
